The Tiger Cub rank starts the adventure for boys interested in Cub Scouts, and is for boys who are seven years old or in the first grade. To begin the journey, the first badge all scouts must earn is the Bobcat badge. Afterwards, they will begin work on the Tiger Cub Badge.
The scouts in this rank must be accompanied to every meeting by an adult or parent partner. This partner is required for each boy, and must attend each meeting. This is a lot of fun for the adult partner, too, as they learn about Scouting, learn about their world and have fun adventures together. It also puts the Scout and adult partner on the right track because there is nothing more a boy wants to see than their adult partner participating in Scouts along with them.
Tiger activities are broken down into four categories, each with its own colored bead to be displayed on the Tiger Instant Recognition Totem. To earn the Totem, worn on the right pocket, the new Scout must learn the Cub Scout Promise, the Cub Scout sign, and the Cub Scout Salute.
- Den Activities (orange bead) – e.g. Practicing the pledge of allegiance, making a food guide pyramid, or make a leaf rubbing.
- Family Activities (white bead) – e.g. Doing a chore with an adult, or looking at a map of your community.
- Go See Its (black bead) – e.g. Visiting a library, newspaper publisher, or taking a hike.
- Electives (yellow disk) – e.g. Helping a new boy, collecting food donations, mixing colors, or sewing a button.
Electives can be completed and tracked, but the disks cannot be awarded until after the Tiger badge is earned.
The Tiger Cub Handbook has all of this information as well as a place for Akela to sign off each activity as it is done. Take your handbook to the den meetings so the den leader can record the completed achievements and award beads.
Several forms for tracking advancement, attendance, and meetings below are provided by the Boy Scouts of America.
- The Tiger Den Meeting Program form lays out the order of a Tiger Den Meeting and explains what each section should be.
- The Tiger Cub Advancement Report shows the progress toward the Tiger Badge at a glance.
- The Tiger Cub Attendance and Dues shows the attendance of each scout in the den and any dues collected for the entire year.
- The Tiger Cub Den Record hold all of the pertinent information needed for the Tiger Cubs. It tracks Tiger Badge requirement completion. There is space for the names of each adult partner and their contact information. It will be the overall record of Tiger Cubs Advancement until they transition to a Wolf den.
- The Individual Tiger Cub Record records contact information for parent and child, attendance, and dues collected.
